(Dan Tri) – Mexican officials on January 10 expedited extradition procedures for drug lord Joaquin `El Chapo` Guzman at the request of the US prosecutor’s office.

Guzman was escorted by Mexican marines to the plane to Altiplano prison after being arrested in Los Mochis.

However, Mexican authorities said this procedure will take a long time, because the `short man’s` lawyers have filed an appeal and sought to keep their client in Mexico.

On January 10, representatives officially informed Guzman that he was wanted in the United States.

His defense lawyers will have 3 days to file an appeal against extradition, and 20 days to present grounds for the appeal.

Sinaloa’s cartel has smuggled tons of cocaine and marijuana into the US, and also produced and transported methamphetamine and heroin, mostly to the US.

Guzman’s lawyer Juan Pablo Badillo stated that his client should not be extradited to the US because `our country must respect national sovereignty and the sovereignty of institutions in the implementation of justice`.

Mexico’s willingness to extradite Guzman is a complete change of stance from his arrest in 2014. At the time, Mexican Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam announced that extradition would only happen after

US authorities currently want Guzman for a series of crimes, including cocaine trafficking, murder and illegal possession of weapons.

According to Mexican law, the maximum sentence a criminal must receive is life imprisonment.

David Shirk, associate professor of political science and international relations at the University of San Diego, said law enforcement agencies will therefore have to be very careful when formulating indictments.

Guzman was recaptured last Friday, after hours of gunfire between his henchmen and Mexican marines, at a house in the city of Los Mochis, Sinaloa state.

Mexican authorities said the contacts between Guzman and American director Sean Penn, during a biographical film project about `the short man`, helped authorities track down the most wanted criminal.

The raid came just days after the interview between Penn and Guzman.
