(Dan Tri) – Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan criticized Beijing’s militarization in the East Sea right before the meeting with his Chinese counterpart in Singapore.

Acting US Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan shakes hands with Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe before the meeting in Singapore on May 31.

Speaking to reporters in Singapore on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue today, May 31, Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said China’s militarized actions in the East Sea, such as deploying land-based missiles,

“They say it’s defensive, but it’s more like excessive destruction, surface-to-air missiles, long runways, they seem to be excessive,” Mr. Shanahan said.

The Pentagon boss made the above statement right before his meeting with Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue today.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Joe Buccino, spokesman for the Pentagon, Secretary Shanahan assessed that the 20-minute meeting with his Chinese counterpart today was `effective and constructive`.

“The two leaders discussed ways to build military-to-military relations to minimize the risk of misunderstandings and miscalculations between the two countries,” Mr. Buccino said.

A Pentagon spokesman said that Secretary Shanahan discussed with his Chinese counterpart how the two militaries could better cooperate in enforcing sanctions against North Korea.

Regarding the East Sea issue, in a speech to defense ministers and military officials at the Shangri-La Dialogue today, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called on China to resolve the dispute peacefully.

`It should be resolved through diplomacy and concessions, instead of force or the threat of force, while considering the core interests and rights of other countries,` Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasized.

“Accordingly, over time, China will build its reputation as a responsible, good power and other countries do not need to fear China.

According to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the basic problem between the US and China today is a lack of mutual strategic trust.

“America is by far the strongest country in the world.

According to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, it still takes several decades for China to become a fully developed country, but Beijing should not wait decades to take on greater responsibility.
