According to RT, after the US dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in August 1945, the Soviet Union realized they needed to develop similar weapons to ensure balance with the US.

The first Soviet nuclear bomb, named RDS-1 and Pervaya Molniya (meaning first lightning), was successfully tested on August 29, 1949 at a test site in the town of Semipalatinsk, Soviet Republic.

New documents declassified by the Russian nuclear agency Rosatom include dozens of pages of text and many photos of this weapon when it was in the development stage.

According to RT, this ambitious project became a real race against time for Soviet scientists at that time because they had to not only meet the deadline set by the government, but the entire development process.

Even the government order for RDS-1 development was carefully encrypted, according to Rosatom.

Specifically, three pages of the above document directed the director of the 11th Manufacturing Department Pavel Zernov to build a `C jet engine (RDS)` with 2 variants using `heavy fuel (C-1) and

The wording of this text seems to indicate that it is not related to nuclear weapons, however, according to RT, `C jet engine` refers to a nuclear bomb, while heavy fuel and light fuel

Scientists were tasked with reporting to the government regularly every month on bomb-making progress.

The remaining newly declassified documents reveal the various processes involved in the Soviet Union’s first nuclear weapons program, which is considered the beginning of the history of the bloc’s nuclear industry as well as

The documents also reveal how the Soviet Union measured indicators during the RDS-1 nuclear bomb test in 1946 to obtain maximum information needed for the manufacturing process.

According to Sputnik, the Soviet Union’s 1949 nuclear bomb test significantly changed the post-World War II balance of power and broke the US monopoly on nuclear weapons.
