Chinese investment in ASEAN increased amid Covid-19 3

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang this afternoon co-chaired the 23rd ASEAN-China Summit, an event in a series of ASEAN summits taking place in Hanoi on December 12-15.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the conference aimed to determine the direction of cooperation and coordination between ASEAN and China to overcome challenges together, repel the risk of epidemics, and preserve a common stable environment for joint recovery.

ASEAN – China cooperation activities are still carried out as planned in a flexible form despite challenges caused by the pandemic.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc chaired the conference on the afternoon of November 12.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said ASEAN was Beijing’s largest trading partner in the first three quarters of this year and Chinese investment in ASEAN increased by 70% over the same period last year.

`For the future, China will continue to cooperate with ASEAN countries, towards peaceful development, to promote peace and stability in the region,` Mr. Li said.

By the end of 2018, China was ASEAN’s largest trading partner for 9 consecutive years, and ASEAN surpassed the US for the first time and became China’s largest trading partner since 1997, according to China Daily.

Xinhua news agency on November 3 quoted Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN Deng Tichjun as saying that two-way trade reached 481.8 billion USD in the first three quarters of 2020, accounting for one-seventh of China’s international trade value.

Prime Minister Li Keqiang said that ASEAN is a high priority in China’s neighborhood policy, pledging to continue supporting ASEAN in building a community and supporting ASEAN’s central role in the region.

China affirmed that it will coordinate closely with ASEAN in efforts to research and produce preventive vaccines and Covid-19 treatment drugs, and consider actively supporting the people of ASEAN countries to have widespread access to vaccines.

The leaders of the parties shared the importance of building the East Sea into a sea of peace, security, stability and cooperation, affirming ASEAN’s principled stance on upholding the rule of law, enhancing dialogue,

The 37th ASEAN Summit and related conferences are the last and most important summit in the year Vietnam chairs it.
