Residents in 11 residential areas in Fengtai district, southern Beijing, were told not to leave their homes after the majority of new infections were linked to a nearby meat market, Beijing officials said at a press conference

The 6 cases of infection in Beijing announced today include three workers at the Xinfadi wholesale meat market, one visitor to the market and two employees of the China Meat Research Center, 7 km from the market.

Nine nearby schools and daycares were closed.

Hundreds of police officers and dozens of armed police were deployed to the two markets.

Chinese police stand outside the entrance to the Xinfadi meat market on June 12.

The owner of the Xinfadi market said that the virus was discovered on cutting boards used to handle imported salmon, raising concerns about the hygiene of Beijing’s food supply.

Major supermarket chains including Wumart and Carrefour have removed all salmon stored overnight in the capital, but said supplies of other products would not be affected.

The first nCoV case in Beijing after two months was announced on June 11.

Beijing authorities announced a mass testing campaign for anyone who had `close contact` with Xinfadi market from May 30.

Covid-19 originated in China in December 2019, appearing in more than 210 countries and territories with more than 7.7 million infections and more than 428,000 deaths.

The epidemic in China has been largely controlled thanks to strict and widespread blockade measures.
