Annabelle first appeared in The Conjuring (2013) – a film revolving around the investigations of mysterious phenomena by husband and wife Ed and Lorraine Warren – two real-life characters.

Annabelle was inspired by a real doll in the shape of Raggedy Ann – a character in a children’s book series by Johnny Gruelle.

Scary stories about Annabelle dolls cause controversy about their authenticity.

According to the Warren family, Annabelle began to cause fear in the 1970s. The doll was bought by a mother for her daughter named Donna – a nursing student.

Several times when they returned home, the two girls found Annabelle lying in another room, her arms and legs folded or upright.

The two girls invited a psychic to find out.

Exorcist Lorraine shared on USA Today: `Appearances deceive you. The doll itself is not scary, but the evil force inside it.`

However, many researchers are skeptical about the story.

In the same opinion, writer Christopher Shultz on Ranker said that the incident resembles a scam by the Warren family with one-sided information.

On the University of Southern California website, Associate Professor of Religion Joseph Laycock commented: `The legend of Annabelle is an interesting case study of the relationship between popular culture and folk tales of the supernatural.`

Doubts seem to increase the appeal of the Annabelle doll when on screen.

Annabelle’s appearance on screen is very different from real life.

Despite being a side story in the movie, ghost dolls suddenly caused a fever and are considered a new symbol in the horror genre.

Annabelle: Evil creature

This year, Annabelle: Creation was born with the purpose of connecting horror films in The Conjuring cinematic universe.

On USA Today, the 36-year-old filmmaker shared: `The doll’s features are softened. The cheeks are fuller and the upper jaw is less protruding compared to the lower jaw.`

However, Annabelle is still very scary, making many actors afraid.

The ghost doll has two separate movies about herself.

Throughout the movie, Annabelle does not move, only the surrounding objects are controlled by it.

`We didn’t want Annabelle to move because it would look silly. Usually, mysterious things are scarier than they appear. The audience’s imagination of Annabelle will create a better effect than any movement.`
